Who We Are

UASLE is a small 6-12 school that serves a female, trans, and non-binary student population. Our students are part of a tight-knit, diverse community and they benefit greatly from our small size and unique personal attention, with many opportunities for leadership and meaningful student-adult partnerships. Civic Engagement, Restorative Justice, and Peer Mediation are integral to our community values and norms, and our students regularly engage with local elected officials and powerful stakeholders in the city and state to elevate their voices.

Our Mission

The Urban Assembly School for Leadership and Empowerment seeks to prepare young female, transgender, and non-binary students for success in college and career.

Our Values

In order to serve as leaders and work towards empowering ourselves and others, we believe it is critical that all members of our community live into these core values: Integrity, Inclusion, Advocacy, and Empathy.

Our History

The Urban Assembly School for Leadership and Empowerment opened in September 2007 as an all-girls’, growing 6-12 school in Borough Park, Brooklyn named The Urban Assembly School for Criminal Justice.  In September 2013 we reached capacity with approximately 500 students.  The Class of 2014, our founding class, graduated in June 2014 with a 95% graduation rate. In 2020, we renamed our school to more closely align with our school's mission and values. 
 
Our school was founded with the belief that by providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills, our students will be college and career ready.  With the support of our parent organization, The Urban Assembly, we continue to expose our students to a rigorous academic program and enrichment opportunities. More recently, we celebrated a 97% graduation rate with the class of 2022

Hypothesis Hotline UASLE Podcast

At UASLE, we're thrilled to offer students a unique platform to share their innovative ideas and rigorous academic work. In our AP Research course, students undertake a year-long inquiry project, building a literature review, identifying a research gap, designing an inquiry proposal, and then conducting research. When they finish their project, each student writes an academic paper of 4,000 - 5,000 words and presents their findings to an oral defense panel. Publishing is the logical next step. With this podcast, students are able to authentically share their findings with their families, our community, and beyond.
